Short answer

Laminate flooring installation cost in Ottawa in 2026 typically runs about $2.00 to $4.00 per sq ft for labour, or about $4.25 to $9.00 per sq ft with the laminate supplied. Laminate stairs are about $100 to $250 per step, and removing the old floor adds about $0.50 to $1.75 per sq ft. These are the average of the published 2026 price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded.

Laminate is one of the most affordable floors to install, and one of the quickest. Still, two quotes for the same rooms can be far apart, usually because of what each one includes: the underlay, the subfloor preparation, removal, stairs and trim. This guide explains the cost to install laminate flooring, what a typical price covers, and what moves it up or down, with example budgets worked out from the ranges.

All the figures here come from our Ottawa flooring cost guide: the average of the published 2026 price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded. They are a guide for budgeting, not an Agora Flooring price list. Your own price comes in a written quote after a free site visit.

Laminate installation cost at a glance

ItemTypical 2026 cost in Ottawa
Laminate installation (labour only)$2.00 – $4.00 per sq ft
Laminate, supplied and installed$4.25 – $9.00 per sq ft
Vinyl or laminate stairs$100 – $250 per step
Removing the old floor$0.50 – $1.75 per sq ft

The labour-only figure applies when you have already bought the laminate. The supplied-and-installed figure covers the laminate and the installation together. Most of the spread between the low and high end is the product: thickness, wear rating, water resistance, board size and the realism of the design. Labour for an entry-level laminate and a premium one is often similar.

What laminate installation usually includes

Laminate is a floating floor. The boards click together edge to edge and rest on an underlay, without being nailed or glued down. A standard installation usually covers laying the underlay, setting out the first row from a straight line, clicking the boards together with the end joints staggered, leaving an expansion gap at every wall and fixed object, undercutting door casings, and fitting transitions at the doorways.

Items that are often priced separately are removing the old floor, levelling, stairs, new baseboard or quarter round, moving furniture and trimming doors. Ask what your quote includes, because not every installer lists the same things. Our guide to how to install laminate flooring explains each step and why it matters.

Underlay and vapour barrier

Laminate always needs an underlay. It smooths minor texture in the subfloor, reduces the hollow sound, and over concrete it blocks moisture. Some laminate comes with a pad attached; other products need a separate underlay that the maker approves. When you compare quotes, check whether the underlay is included and which one, because it is a real line in the material cost.

Never double up. A second cushion under an attached pad, or two pads stacked, lets the boards flex and breaks the joints, and it can void the warranty. Over concrete, a vapour barrier is needed, either built into a combination underlay or as a separate sheet. In condos, the building's sound rules usually decide what goes under the floor, and an approved acoustic underlay can cost more than a basic one; see condo flooring rules. Our guide to underlay for vinyl and laminate compares the types.

Subfloor levelling: the extra that changes the price

A floating floor is only as flat as what is under it. Makers commonly specify a flatness tolerance around 3/16" in 10 ft; check your product's figure. Over a dip, the boards flex each time someone steps on them. That wears the click joints, makes the floor sound hollow and lets the joints open. Underlay is not a levelling product, and it won't hide a dip.

If the subfloor is out of flat, low spots are filled with patching compound or self-levelling compound, and high spots are ground or sanded down. On a wood subfloor, loose panels and squeaks are screwed down first. How much work this takes can't be known until the old floor is up and the subfloor is checked with a straightedge, so levelling is usually priced after a site visit rather than included in a per-square-foot rate.

Removing the old floor

Removing the old floor averages about $0.50 to $1.75 per sq ft in the published ranges. Carpet, pad, tack strip and staples come up quickly, which puts carpet at the lower end. An old floating floor also lifts out fairly easily. Glued-down vinyl, old tile and mortar beds take far longer and sit at the top of the range. Laminate should not float on top of another floating floor or over carpet, so those floors always come out first.

Laminate on stairs

Vinyl or laminate stairs average about $100 to $250 per step in the published ranges. Laminate doesn't float on stairs. Each tread and riser is measured, cut, glued and fastened, with a stair nosing made for that floor so the front edge is finished and strong. That is why stairs are priced per step, and why a staircase can cost as much as a whole room of laminate.

The price within the range depends on what has to come off first (carpet, old treads or nosings), whether the stairs are open on the sides, landings and curved steps, and the nosing profile. Our guide to stair nosing explains the options, and our stair installation page covers the work.

Transitions, baseboard and quarter round

At most doorways, laminate stops with a transition. A T-moulding joins floors of about the same height, a reducer steps down to a lower floor, and an end moulding finishes against a sliding door track or hearth. Many makers also set a maximum length and width for one continuous floor, and beyond it a transition acts as an expansion break. Each one is a piece of material and a little labour. Our guide to floor transition strips explains each type.

The expansion gap at the walls is covered with trim. Taking off and reinstalling the baseboard gives the cleanest result. Keeping the baseboard and adding quarter round is often quicker and covers a wider gap. New baseboard, and painting it, are usually priced separately from the floor. Our guide to quarter round vs baseboard compares the two.

Rooms where laminate isn't the right floor

Laminate suits dry rooms: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and home offices. It is a poor choice for full bathrooms and laundry rooms, because water that sits in the joints can make the wood-fibre core swell, and that swelling doesn't go back down. Water-resistant laminates hold up much better, but they still have limits, so read the warranty.

Kitchens and entries are possible with a water-resistant product and some care. For most Ottawa basements on concrete, vinyl plank is the safer floor, because it has no wood-fibre core to swell. A cheaper floor in the wrong room is not a saving if it has to be replaced. Our guide to LVP vs laminate compares the two room by room, and the vinyl plank installation cost guide has the vinyl prices.

Example laminate budgets

These examples multiply the published ranges by stated areas. They are for budgeting only.

A bedroom, 12 ft by 12 ft. The floor area is 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft. Supplied and installed: 144 × $4.25 = $612, and 144 × $9.00 = $1,296, so about $610 to $1,300. Labour only, if you have bought the laminate: 144 × $2.00 = $288 to 144 × $4.00 = $576. Removing old carpet adds 144 × $0.50 = $72 to 144 × $1.75 = $252.

Three bedrooms, 300 sq ft. Supplied and installed: 300 × $4.25 = $1,275, and 300 × $9.00 = $2,700, so about $1,275 to $2,700. Labour only: 300 × $2.00 = $600 to 300 × $4.00 = $1,200. Removal, if needed: 300 × $0.50 = $150 to 300 × $1.75 = $525.

A living and dining room, 500 sq ft. Supplied and installed: 500 × $4.25 = $2,125, and 500 × $9.00 = $4,500. Labour only: 500 × $2.00 = $1,000 to 500 × $4.00 = $2,000.

A staircase of 13 steps. 13 × $100 = $1,300, and 13 × $250 = $3,250. Added to the three bedrooms, that comes to $1,275 + $1,300 = $2,575 to $2,700 + $3,250 = $5,950, before removal, levelling and trim. Prices in Ontario are usually quoted before the 13% HST, so check whether a quote includes it.

What's usually not included in a laminate quote

These items are often left out of laminate quotes, so ask who takes care of each:

  • Removing and disposing of the old floor.
  • Levelling and subfloor repairs.
  • The underlay, when the laminate has no attached pad.
  • Moving furniture and appliances.
  • New baseboard or quarter round, and painting it.
  • Trimming doors that no longer clear the new floor.

How to compare laminate installation quotes

Compare quotes line by line, not by the total. Check that each one covers the same rooms, closets and stairs, the same laminate, and the same underlay. Look for removal and disposal, how levelling will be priced, transitions at each doorway, and whether the baseboard is reinstalled, replaced or covered with quarter round. Ask how much extra material is ordered for cuts and kept for future repairs, and whether HST is included.

A quote that is low because it skips levelling or uses the wrong underlay often costs more later, when the joints open or peak. Agora gives free estimates in person, by phone, by email or online, and a written quote that includes the subfloor prep the room needs. See our laminate flooring installation page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does laminate flooring installation cost per square foot?

In Ottawa in 2026, labour typically runs about $2.00 to $4.00 per sq ft, or about $4.25 to $9.00 per sq ft with the laminate supplied. Those are the average of the published price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded.

How much does it cost to install laminate flooring in 1,000 sq ft?

Multiplying the published ranges, labour alone is 1,000 × $2.00 = $2,000 to 1,000 × $4.00 = $4,000, and supplied and installed is 1,000 × $4.25 = $4,250 to 1,000 × $9.00 = $9,000. Stairs, removal and levelling are extra.

Is underlay included in the cost to install laminate?

Sometimes. Some laminate has a pad attached, and a supplied-and-installed price may include the underlay. Ask which underlay is included, and never add a second pad under an attached one.

How much does it cost to put laminate on stairs?

Vinyl or laminate stairs typically cost about $100 to $250 per step. A 13-step staircase comes to about $1,300 to $3,250.

Is laminate cheaper to install than vinyl plank?

They are close. Laminate labour averages about $2.00 to $4.00 per sq ft and vinyl plank about $1.75 to $3.75. Supplied and installed, laminate is about $4.25 to $9.00 and vinyl plank about $4.25 to $9.50.

Is removing the old floor included?

Often not. Removing the old floor typically adds about $0.50 to $1.75 per sq ft, depending on what is coming up. Carpet is quicker to remove than glued-down vinyl or tile.
