Baseboards & trim FAQ.
Do I need new baseboards with a new floor?
Often. Floating floors need an expansion gap at the walls that baseboards or quarter-round cover, and old baseboards may be damaged coming off or sit at the wrong height for the new floor. Sometimes existing baseboards can be reused with quarter-round added.
What is the difference between baseboard and quarter-round?
Baseboard is the tall trim along the bottom of the wall. Quarter-round and shoe moulding are small profiles fixed along the base of the baseboard to cover the gap at the edge of the floor without removing the baseboard.
Will my doors still close after a new floor?
A thicker new floor can make doors rub. Door casings are undercut so the flooring slides underneath, and doors can be trimmed at the bottom where needed.
