Short answer
Carpet installation cost in Ottawa in 2026 typically runs about $0.85 to $2.00 per sq ft for labour (about $7.50 to $18 per sq yd), or about $3.50 to $7.50 per sq ft with the carpet and underpad supplied. Carpet on stairs is about $80 to $180 per standard flight, and removing the old floor adds about $0.50 to $1.75 per sq ft. These are the average of the published 2026 price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded.
Carpet is the least expensive common floor to install, but two quotes for the same room can still be far apart. The difference is usually in what each one includes and in the carpet and pad chosen, not in the labour rate alone. This guide explains what carpet installation costs, what a typical price covers, and what moves it up or down, with example budgets worked out from the ranges.
All the figures here come from our Ottawa flooring cost guide: the average of the published 2026 price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded. They are a guide for budgeting, not an Agora Flooring price list. Your own price depends on your rooms and the products you choose.
Carpet installation cost at a glance
| Item | Typical 2026 cost in Ottawa |
|---|---|
| Carpet installation (labour only) | $0.85 – $2.00 per sq ft (about $7.50 – $18 per sq yd) |
| Carpet with underpad, supplied and installed | $3.50 – $7.50 per sq ft |
| Carpet on stairs | $80 – $180 per standard flight |
| Removing the old floor | $0.50 – $1.75 per sq ft |
The labour-only figure applies when you have already bought the carpet and pad. The supplied-and-installed figure covers the carpet, the underpad and the installation together. The spread is wide mostly because carpet itself ranges from basic to premium. Labour for an entry-level carpet and a premium one is often similar, so the product is where most of the difference lies.
What carpet installation usually includes
A standard broadloom installation usually covers the steps that make carpet lie flat and last. Ask what is included in your quote, because not every installer lists the same things.
- Tack strip around the edges of the room, which grips the carpet.
- Underpad, laid and stapled or glued down, with the seams taped.
- Seaming where two pieces meet, with the seams placed away from main walking paths where the room allows.
- Power-stretching, so the carpet is pulled tight across the room.
- Trimming and tucking at the walls, under the baseboard edge.
- Transitions at doorways where carpet meets tile, vinyl or wood.
Power-stretching deserves a note. Carpet that is only pushed into place with a knee kicker can loosen over time, and that is the main cause of ripples and wrinkles. Carpet makers commonly call for power-stretching on wall-to-wall installations, so make sure it is part of the job. Transitions are covered in more detail in our guide to floor transition strips.
Items that are often not included are moving furniture, removing and disposing of the old floor, subfloor repairs, and trimming doors that no longer clear the new carpet. None of them are unusual. They just need to be agreed before the work starts.
What changes carpet installation cost
Several things move a carpet price within the range, or above it.
Carpet quality and fibre. This is the biggest variable in a supplied-and-installed price. Nylon is the most resilient common fibre, polyester is soft and good value, and wool is natural and premium. Density matters more than how thick the pile feels in the store: a dense carpet holds its look longer than a tall, loose one. Our guide to carpet tile vs broadloom covers fibres in more detail.
Underpad. Pads differ in material, thickness and density. The right pad makes carpet feel better and last longer, while a pad that is too soft or thick can shorten its life and may not meet the carpet's warranty. In condos, the building may require an approved underpad or underlay for sound control; see condo flooring rules.
Room shape and roll width. Broadloom comes off the roll in fixed widths, commonly 12 ft. A room up to 12 ft wide can often be covered in one piece. A room 13 ft wide needs the full width plus a strip, and that means a seam and often extra waste. Closets, angled walls and L-shaped rooms add cuts and seams. More on this below.
Stairs. Stairs are priced by the flight because every step is cut and fitted by hand. Curved stairs, pie-shaped steps, landings and open sides take longer than a standard straight flight.
Removal and disposal. Taking up old carpet, pad, tack strip and staples is quicker than removing glued-down vinyl or tile. The removal range above reflects that difference.
Moving furniture. Some installers include moving standard furniture, some charge for it and some don't do it. Pianos, aquariums and very heavy pieces usually need special arrangements.
Floor repairs. Once the old carpet is up, the subfloor may need squeaks screwed down, a damaged panel replaced or a low spot filled. These repairs are usually priced once the floor can be seen.
Patterns. Patterned carpet has to be matched at every seam, the way wallpaper is. That uses more material and more labour than a plain carpet.
Why carpet is measured on site before ordering
Because broadloom is sold off a roll of fixed width, the amount you order is not simply the floor area. It depends on the room's shape, which way the pile runs and where the seams go. Seams have to run with the pile in the same direction on both sides, or the two pieces look like different colours. Installers also order a little extra at each wall for trimming.
Take a room 12 ft by 14 ft. With a 12 ft roll, it can usually be covered with one piece 12 ft wide and a little over 14 ft long, with no seam. Now take a room 13 ft by 15 ft. The roll covers 12 ft of the width, and the last 1 ft needs a separate strip 15 ft long, joined with a seam. That strip may be cut from a much larger piece of carpet, and the rest of the piece is waste unless it fits a closet or another room. Two rooms with similar square footage can need quite different amounts of carpet.
That is why carpet is measured on site and the layout planned before anything is ordered. A careful plan puts seams where they will show least, away from doorways and main paths, and uses off-cuts in closets. See our carpet installation page for how we approach it.
Per square foot vs per square yard
Carpet prices are quoted both ways, and it is easy to compare them wrongly. One square yard is 3 ft by 3 ft, which is 9 sq ft. To turn a price per square yard into a price per square foot, divide by 9. To go the other way, multiply by 9.
So the labour range of about $0.85 to $2.00 per sq ft is the same as about $7.50 to $18 per sq yd. When you compare two quotes or two store tags, put them in the same unit first. Also check whether each price includes the underpad, and whether it is based on the floor area or on the carpet actually ordered, including the waste from the roll width.
Carpet on stairs
Carpet on stairs averages about $80 to $180 per standard flight in the published ranges, with curved stairs, landings and open sides costing more. There are two common ways to carpet a staircase. Waterfall style lets the carpet flow over the front edge of each step and down to the next tread, without being pressed in under the nosing. Hollywood style (also called wrapped or upholstered) pulls the carpet tightly around each nosing and tucks it under, which gives a tailored look and usually takes longer. Curved or bullnose bottom steps are often done cap-and-band, with the top of the step and the curved riser covered as separate fitted pieces.
Either way, the pile should run down the stairs so it wears evenly and looks the same from the bottom. A dense carpet with a firm underpad holds up best, because the front edge of each step takes the most wear. If you are putting a hard floor on the stairs instead, our guide to stair nosing covers the options, and our stair installation page covers treads and runners.
Example carpet budgets
These examples use the supplied-and-installed range of $3.50 to $7.50 per sq ft, applied to the floor area. They are for budgeting only. Rooms that need extra carpet because of the roll width will cost more.
A bedroom, 12 ft by 14 ft. The floor area is 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft. Carpet with underpad, supplied and installed: 168 × $3.50 = $588, and 168 × $7.50 = $1,260, so about $590 to $1,260. If the old carpet has to come out, add 168 × $0.50 = $84 to 168 × $1.75 = $294, about $85 to $295. If you have already bought the carpet and pad, labour alone is 168 × $0.85 = $142.80 to 168 × $2.00 = $336, about $145 to $335.
A basement family room, 16 ft by 20 ft. The floor area is 16 × 20 = 320 sq ft. Supplied and installed: 320 × $3.50 = $1,120, and 320 × $7.50 = $2,400, so about $1,120 to $2,400. A room 16 ft wide is wider than a 12 ft roll, so it will have a seam and more carpet ordered than the floor area. Removal, if needed, is 320 × $0.50 = $160 to 320 × $1.75 = $560. Before carpeting a basement, make sure the slab is dry; see best basement flooring.
A flight of stairs. About $80 to $180 for a standard straight flight. Added to the family room above, the basement and its stairs come to about $1,120 + $80 = $1,200 to $2,400 + $180 = $2,580, before removal.
Prices in Ontario are usually quoted before the 13% HST, so check whether a quote includes it.
Carpet tile for basements and offices
Carpet tile comes in squares or planks that are laid one by one, usually with a releasable adhesive. It isn't stretched, so there is no tack strip or power-stretching, and there is less waste in odd-shaped rooms because tiles are cut individually. The big advantage is repair: if one area is stained or gets wet, a few tiles can be lifted and replaced. That makes it popular for basements, home offices, condo corridors and commercial spaces. It is firmer underfoot than broadloom. Carpet tile is priced differently from broadloom, so ask for a quote on both if you are deciding. See carpet tile vs broadloom.
How long carpet installation takes
Carpet is one of the faster floors to install. A single bedroom is often done in a few hours once the room is clear and the old carpet is out. A whole floor of bedrooms, or a large basement, is often a one or two day job. Stairs, many closets, patterned carpet and subfloor repairs add time. You can usually walk on new carpet as soon as it is installed.
Preparing the room
Clear the room, or confirm who moves the furniture and what is included. Empty closets that are being carpeted, take fragile items off nearby shelves, and unplug electronics. Think about door clearance: new carpet and pad can sit higher than the old floor, and some doors may need trimming afterwards. Vacuum the old carpet before it comes up to cut down on dust. Our preparing for flooring installation checklist covers the rest, including condo elevator bookings.
Comparing carpet installation quotes
A low number can leave out the things another quote includes. Compare quotes line by line:
- The same rooms, closets and stairs, and the same carpet and underpad.
- Whether the price is per sq ft or per sq yd, and on floor area or carpet ordered.
- Removal and disposal of the old floor.
- Moving furniture.
- Power-stretching, seam placement and transitions at each doorway.
- How subfloor repairs will be priced if they are needed.
- Whether HST is included.

Caring for new carpet
New cut-pile carpet sheds loose fibres for the first few weeks, which is normal and goes away with regular vacuuming. After that, vacuum busy areas often, blot spills instead of rubbing them, and put mats at the entrances to stop grit and winter salt. Many carpet warranties require periodic professional cleaning, so keep the receipts. Our carpet care guide covers the details.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install carpet per square foot?
In Ottawa in 2026, labour typically runs about $0.85 to $2.00 per sq ft, or about $3.50 to $7.50 per sq ft with carpet and underpad supplied. Those are the average of the published price ranges of four Ottawa flooring companies, rounded.
How much does carpet installation cost per square yard?
Labour typically runs about $7.50 to $18 per sq yd. One square yard is 9 sq ft, so divide a per-square-yard price by 9 to compare it with a per-square-foot price.
Does carpet installation include the underpad?
A supplied-and-installed price usually includes the underpad; a labour-only price usually doesn't include the pad itself. Ask which pad is included, and in a condo, check that it meets the building's rules.
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
About $80 to $180 for a standard straight flight. Curved stairs, landings and open sides cost more.
Is removing old carpet included in the price?
Often not. Removing the old floor typically adds about $0.50 to $1.75 per sq ft, depending on what is coming up. Carpet comes up faster than glued-down floors or tile.
Why do I need more carpet than my room's square footage?
Broadloom comes in fixed roll widths, commonly 12 ft, so rooms wider than the roll need a seam and a fill strip, and some carpet is wasted. A little extra is also needed at each wall for trimming.
