Short answer

In Ottawa in 2026, tile installation labour for porcelain and ceramic typically runs about $5 to $12 per square foot. With the tile included, most floors come to about $7.50 to $18.50 per square foot supplied and installed. Mosaics, natural stone, patterns like herringbone, shower walls and floors that need levelling sit at the top of the range or above it.

"What does tile cost per square foot?" has a short answer and a long one. The short one is the range above. The long one is that the price follows the work: how flat the floor is, how big the tile is, how many cuts the layout needs and what goes under the tile. This guide walks through each of those so you can read a quote and know why it says what it says.

What makes tile cost more (or less)

1. The floor under the tile

Tile is only as flat as what it sits on. Floors that dip, hump or bounce need work first: grinding high spots, filling low ones or pouring a self-levelling compound. Wood subfloors often get an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter-DITRA. This is the line most often missing from a low quote, and the one that decides whether the tile cracks later.

2. Tile size

  • Mid-size tile (about 12×24) is usually the quickest to install per square foot.
  • Large-format tile (24×48 and bigger) has fewer pieces, but needs a flatter floor, more mortar, levelling clips and often two people to set each tile. See our large-format tile guide.
  • Small tile and mosaics cover less area per piece and have far more grout lines, so the labour per square foot goes up.

3. The layout

A straight or stacked layout is the cheapest. Brick offsets add a little. Diagonal, herringbone and chevron layouts need many more cuts and about 15% or more extra tile, so both the labour and the material go up.

4. Floors, walls or showers

Open floors go fastest. Walls are slower: every row is cut around outlets, windows and cabinets. Shower walls are slower again, with waterproofing first and cuts around the valve, niche and corners. For a full breakdown, see what it costs to tile a shower in Ottawa.

5. The tile itself

Porcelain and ceramic cover most budgets. Natural stone, glass and handmade-look tile cost more to buy, and they are slower to cut and set. Stone also needs sealing.

6. Extras

  • Removing and disposing of the old floor
  • Electric heated floor mats or cables under the tile
  • Metal edge trims, stair nosings and transitions at doorways
  • Tile baseboard
  • Niches, benches and feature strips in showers

Example budgets

These multiply the ranges above. They cover the tile work only, not plumbing, cabinets or drywall.

  • Kitchen floor, 150 sq ft of porcelain, supplied and installed: 150 × $7.50 – $18.50 = about $1,125 – $2,775, plus removal and levelling if needed.
  • Main-floor hallway and entry, 300 sq ft of porcelain: 300 × $7.50 – $18.50 = about $2,250 – $5,550.
  • Bathroom floor, 50 sq ft of mosaic: 50 × $20 – $40 = about $1,000 – $2,000.
  • Standard alcove shower, about 90 sq ft of porcelain wall tile with waterproofing and a pre-formed base: about $1,800 – $4,550 (see the shower cost guide).

Small rooms cost more per square foot than large ones. A powder room still needs the same setup, mixing, cutting and grouting steps as a kitchen, spread over far fewer square feet.

How to compare tile quotes

  • Check that each quote covers the same square footage, including closets and the area under appliances you want tiled.
  • Ask what is under the tile: levelling, membrane, waterproofing. Two quotes can differ by a lot just because one leaves this out.
  • Ask which mortar and grout are included, and whether the grout is cement or epoxy (see grout types explained).
  • Confirm removal, disposal, trims and transitions.
  • Ask how much extra tile to order for cuts and keep for future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Is tile installation priced per square foot or per job?

Usually per square foot for floors and walls, with separate prices for preparation, waterproofing, trims and extras. Very small jobs are often priced as a whole, because the setup takes the same time whatever the size.

Why is tile more expensive to install than vinyl or laminate?

Tile takes more steps: preparing a flat, stiff floor, spreading mortar, setting each tile level, cutting around every edge, then grouting once the mortar has cured. Vinyl and laminate click together over an underlay in one step.

Does a bigger tile cost less to install?

Not always. Mid-size tile is usually the quickest. Very large tile has fewer pieces but needs a flatter floor, more mortar, levelling clips and two people to handle each piece, which can make it cost more per square foot.
